Exploring Val Genova: the "Valley of Waterfalls" at the foot of the Adamello
A continuous roar filling the forest air and the unmistakable scent of damp moss and resin: this is the typical welcome of Val Genova. Located in the heart of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, this deep lateral valley of Val Rendena carves its way through walls of tonalite, the hard granitic rock that characterises the Adamello-Presanella massif. Here, the landscape presents a radically different character compared to the nearby limestone spires of the Brenta Dolomites.
The realm of water: Nardis, Lares and Folgorida
It is no coincidence that it is called the "valley of waterfalls". The sharp elevation difference between the high peaks and the valley floor generates visually striking waterfalls, fed by glacial basins.
- Nardis Waterfalls: They are the valley's calling card, visible with a short walk just past the road entrance. The water plunges for dozens of metres down the slopes of the Presanella, misting over the rocks below and creating frequent rainbows on sunny days.
- Lares Waterfalls: Continuing further inland, the Sarca di Genova stream collects the waters flowing down from the lateral valleys. The Lares waterfalls, nestled in a dense coniferous forest, cascade over multiple successive drops, requiring a short detour on foot to be admired in all their grandeur.
- Folgorida Waterfall: More secluded, it is a picturesque stop for those who choose to hike the trails that venture into the woods, away from the main valley floor route.
The gateway to the glaciers
Val Genova is not just a destination for walks in the shade of fir trees. It is the historic gateway for mountaineers and experienced hikers heading towards the great Mandrone and Adamello glaciers.
As you ascend the valley, passing stone cabins and clearings, the vegetation thins out. The landscape progressively transforms: dense forests give way to shrubs and high-altitude pastures, eventually revealing the vast expanses of moraine debris and glaciers that shape the skyline. It is a harsh environment, bearing witness to complex geological dynamics and ongoing climate change.
Useful access information
As one of the most delicate and visited environments in the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, the management of vehicle flows requires careful attention. During the high season, car traffic along the narrow Val Genova road is regulated. Motor vehicle access is restricted or managed via booking and toll systems, encouraging the use of specially provided shuttle buses. This system preserves the balance of local wildlife and guarantees a peaceful experience for hikers. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the mobility regulations in force for your chosen period and consult local weather forecasts.
