Campiglio with Kids: Experiencing the Mountains as a Family

Madonna di Campiglio
Back to Discover

Experiencing the mountains with children requires a change of pace, patience, and a bit of adventurous spirit. The Madonna di Campiglio basin, nestled between the Dolomiti di Brenta and the Adamello and Presanella massifs, offers a natural backdrop that seems purpose-built to stimulate the curiosity of little ones. Here, the side valleys hide alpine lakes and coniferous forests where time slows down, allowing families to reconnect with nature.

October at high altitude: the new rhythms of nature

Visiting Campiglio in the heart of autumn means experiencing a more intimate and silent mountain. It is the time when the woods light up with golden and reddish hues, offering an unparalleled visual spectacle.

However, exploring Val Rendena during this period requires careful planning. The summer ski lifts and cable cars closed their doors between September 13 and 20, 2026. This means that high-altitude excursions relying on the lifts are not currently a viable option, and the mountains must be conquered starting from the valley floors.

Lago di Nambino: the perfect itinerary for strollers

One of the most beloved destinations for families is undoubtedly Lago di Nambino. Often, however, those traveling with small children or a stroller clash with the steepness of the traditional trail that climbs from the valley floor, characterized by roots and rather steep natural steps.

The ideal, barrier-free solution exists: it is a flat path suitable for trekking strollers that connects the Patascoss area directly to the lake. In about a 50-minute walk at a child's pace, this track gently winds through the woods, offering panoramic views and a smooth surface. Reaching the shores of the lake, with the reflection of the peaks in the crystal-clear water, thus becomes a relaxing experience for the whole family, without the stress of a demanding elevation gain.

Little explorers in the Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta

Walking in the woods of the Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta is an excellent opportunity to turn children into little explorers. The landscape offers an open-air geology lesson: on one side, the dark, water-rich tonalite rocks of the Adamello; on the other, the pale limestone spires of the Dolomiti di Brenta.

In autumn, the forest is a bustling theater. Explain to the children how to look for animal footprints in the soft mud of the trails. October is also the month when, with a little luck and silence, it is possible to hear the roaring of the deer in the distance, a primordial call that echoes through the valleys during the mating season. And do not forget history: the Empress of Austria herself, Sissi, stayed in Campiglio at the end of the nineteenth century. Telling the little ones that they are walking in the very same woods chosen by a real imperial court adds a touch of magic to the hike.

Mountain flavors: what to talk about at the table

A trip to Val Rendena is also a gastronomic discovery. At the table or during a picnic, food becomes a way to get to know the territory.

Golden rules for families in the mountains

To ensure the day goes as smoothly as possible, keep these simple practices in mind:

  • Dress in layers: In autumn, the temperature range between shaded and sunny areas, or between morning and afternoon, is significant. "Onion-style" layering is the only practical solution.
  • Get informed in advance: Weather conditions and the status of high-altitude trails change rapidly. Before leaving, check the weather forecasts and verify the actual opening of mountain huts and refreshment points, many of which reduce their services after September.
  • No rush: The goal is not the summit, but the experience. Let the children stop to observe a pinecone, touch the moss, or throw a pebble into the water.

Madonna di Campiglio and its valleys, experienced with the right timing and proper precautions, can provide unforgettable memories for the whole family.
