Far from the most crowded routes, there is a corner of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park where water and limestone rock create a color contrast of rare beauty. Lago di Valagola, located in the namesake basin that branches off from the majestic Val Brenta, is a peaceful and highly fascinating destination, reachable on foot from the valley floor.
On a map dotted with alpine lakes, Valagola holds a notable geological peculiarity. Most of the Park's bodies of water are in fact concentrated on the crystalline side of the Adamello-Presanella, where impermeable rocks such as tonalite retain the melting snows. The Brenta Dolomites side, on the contrary, is karstic in nature and tends to swallow water. Lago di Valagola is one of the rare and precious exceptions on this side, formed thanks to morainic and clayey deposits that sealed its seabed, allowing water to gather in the presence of the Dolomite spires.
Planning the hike: seasonal notices (October 2026)
Autumn is undoubtedly one of the most evocative times to undertake this walk. The air becomes crisp, the larches begin their metamorphosis towards golden hues, and the forest prepares for its winter rest. However, moving in the mountains during this period requires careful planning and staying updated on local logistical conditions.
It is essential to remember that the ski lifts and summer cable cars in the area ended their season between September 13 and 20, 2026. Any high-altitude itinerary relying on lifts is currently not viable with these facilities. Furthermore, for those planning to connect this hike with the nearby Vallesinella area, utmost attention is required: since September 21, 2026, due to forestry work on the strada Cason, a section of the trail between the Vallesinella parking lot and the Cascate di Mezzo is closed to pedestrian traffic, along with a portion of the famous Sentiero dell'Arciduca.
For these very reasons, the itinerary starting from the valley floor of Val Brenta proves to be an ideal choice, independent of the aforementioned closures, relying exclusively on one's own legs and the valley floor trail network.
The stages of the itinerary
The hike develops through diverse environments, offering a gradual immersion into the unspoiled nature of the valley.
1. The Val Brenta valley floor
The starting point is located in the Val Brenta plain. Access to this area is via a seasonally regulated road; it is advisable to check with the Park authorities regarding the vehicular transit methods permitted in October to approach the trailhead.
Walking on the valley floor means crossing clearings that were once fundamental for local subsistence, where grass was mowed for livestock and timber was collected to survive the harsh winters. The historical influence of Habsburg rule has left its mark on the forestry organization of these valleys, once a hunting and timber reserve for the Empire, and today a primary ecological corridor for wildlife, including the brown bear that inhabits the surrounding forests.
2. The ascent through the woods
Leaving behind the comfort of the plain, the itinerary, classified with a medium difficulty level, requires facing a constant elevation gain, delving into the dense vegetation. The trail winds through Norway spruces and larches, on terrain that in autumn is covered with a soft and fragrant carpet of fallen needles.
During this phase, the physical effort is rewarded by the enveloping silence. Between September and October, those who walk in these areas with respect and during morning or early evening hours have a good chance of hearing the roaring of the deer, a powerful and ancestral call that resonates along the mountain slopes. The ascent requires a steady pace and suitable footwear, especially after recent rains which can make roots and exposed rocks slippery.
3. Arrival at Lago di Valagola
At the end of the ascent, the forest suddenly opens up, revealing the basin that hosts the lake. Framed by the dark green of the conifers and dominated by the imposing surrounding Dolomite walls, Lago di Valagola offers a postcard-perfect panorama. On days when the wind is silent, the surface of the water turns into a perfect mirror reflecting the peaks and passing clouds.
The shores of the lake invite a contemplative pause. Here you can also find malga structures, a testament to the ancient alpine farming tradition of Val Rendena. Even though in autumn the herds have already returned to the valley, the rustic wood and stone architectures enrich the landscape, telling stories of hard work and the deep bond between man and mountain.
