The Danse Macabre of Pinzolo: the 1539 masterpiece to rediscover in autumn
The austere charm of the Chiesa di San Vigilio
Strolling through Pinzolo, your attention is easily captured by the silhouette of the cemetery church of San Vigilio. Nestled within the inhabited center of the town, the exterior of this structure houses one of the most significant pictorial cycles in the Alps, a work capable of directly recounting the mentality and culture of sixteenth-century Val Rendena.
The work of Simone Baschenis
On the south facade of the church unfolds the famous Danse Macabre, painted in 1539 by Simone Baschenis. The Baschenis were a prolific dynasty of itinerant painters originally from the Bergamo area, who for decades decorated the churches of the Trentino valleys. The fact that the fresco is located on the outer wall makes it freely observable by passersby, offering an open-air art gallery.
The work is a stern memento mori, but also a powerful social leveler. Observing the meters of painting up close, details of great expressive force emerge:
- The inexorable procession: Popes, emperors, prelates, and peasants are depicted in a strict line, each accompanied by the hand of a sneering skeleton, demonstrating that in the face of the end, all earthly hierarchies are nullified.
- The musical instruments: Death is represented in a dynamic way; the skeletons are intent on playing bagpipes and wind instruments to dictate the relentless rhythm of the march.
- The vernacular texts: Below the figures run long scrolls with dialect verses of the time, warning the viewer about the fleeting nature of life and material goods, making the message understandable to everyone.
Take the time to walk up to San Vigilio. Observing these ancient pigments illuminated by the grazing autumn light allows you to appreciate the concreteness of local history, reminding us how much art served as an open book for mountain communities.
